ENERGY SAVING DESIGN FEATURES
The Center for Forensic Medicine is an energy responsive facility that
uses the "whole-building" design approach to achieve a projected
30 percent savings in energy costs compared to a conventionally designed
building with similar requirements. These features include:
- Light shelves on the outside of the building to redirect natural
light onto the ceilings to provide sufficient ambient light for office
functions
- Clerestory windows bring daylight into the entrance lobby
- Skylights in interior autopsy areas to allow forensic procedures to
be performed under natural light
- High performance window glazing to maintain an efficient heat barrier
- Daylight dimming controls in daylight spaces to reduce use of artificial
light
- High efficiency mechanical equipment for air handling, building heating
and cooling, and the morgue body coolers
- Computerized controls to optimize the efficiencies of HVAC equipment
