FORENSIC PATHOLOGY FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

An innovative and successful forensic medicine and pathology practice is seeking highly motivated forensic pathology fellows. Forensic Medical, the Office of the Medical Examiner for the State of Tennessee and Metropolitan Nashville/Davidson County, has the academic credentials, qualified forensic pathologists, physical facilities, as well as a caseload that will provide a stimulating and enjoyable learning experience for the individual who seeks to be challenged.

Forensic Medical was established several years ago to provide private medical examiner and forensic services to Metropolitan Davidson County and the surrounding counties in Middle Tennessee. Since shortly after its inception, the Office has been accredited by the National Association of Medical Examiners and all of its investigators have passed certifying examinations given by the American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators. Forensic Medical has six board certified pathologists on its staff; each one of these individuals has received his anatomic, clinical and forensic pathology training in large academic medical centers across the country. In recognition of the stature of the Office, it was awarded accreditation by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education for a Forensic Pathology Training Program in 2000.

Approximately 4500 deaths are reported annually to the investigators at Forensic Medical, resulting in at least 1700 autopsies and 500 external examinations. Between 10 -15 percent of these cases are homicides and the remainder are divided among natural causes, accidents, and suicides. The result is a wide variety of autopsy material available for teaching and learning.

The State of Tennessee Center for Forensic Medicine is a 20,000 square foot state of the art facility that houses the State and Metro Medical Examiners in a cooperative relationship between the Tennessee and Nashville governments. In addition to BSL-3 autopsy suites are an anthropology lab, tissue donation room, individual office space for the fellow, and ample space for teaching and research.

Further, Forensic Medical has a close working relationship with Vanderbilt University Medical School and Meharry Medical College: Residents and students rotate regularly through the Office and the pathologists have appointments as Clinical Professors at the schools. Pathologists from Vanderbilt regularly assist the office pathologists with neuropathology consultations and in other areas as needed. A number of papers have been published and presented alone and in conjunction with outside faculty.

Other valuable resources which enhance the training program include a fully dedicated toxicology laboratory where specimens are sent. The laboratory has two highly-trained PhD toxicologists who work full time in the field. In addition, the office of the Director of the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is located near Forensic Medical and training will be available there. A forensic anthropologist and a forensic odontologist are other staff members who provide frequent consultation to Forensic Medical.

Nashville , Tennessee is located in the gently rolling hills of Middle Tennessee. Many industries provide a strong economic climate and Vanderbilt is only one of a number of fine institutions of higher learning located in the area. An excellent symphony orchestra and numerous lakes and parks make it a particularly enjoyable place to live.

Applicants must be in an accredited pathology training program, or AP or AP/CP board eligible or certified with the American Board of Pathology. In addition, the candidate must have or be eligible for a Tennessee license.
