Dr. John Gerber

1942-2004

Nashville's No. 2 medical examiner, Dr. John E. Gerber, who worked on many cases that drew media attention, has died.

Dr. Gerber died Sunday on his 62nd birthday after an eight-week struggle with brain cancer.

In one case, he used dental records to help identify singer-songwriter Gregory Guidry, whose body had been burned beyond recognition. Dr. Gerber also conducted an autopsy on Tyler Beasley, 16, who collapsed on a soccer field and died.

When he was not searching for a cause of death, Dr. Gerber was an avid bicyclist, a pianist, organist and singer in the classical tradition, as well as an enthusiastic gardener and environmentalist.

Dr. Gerber was raised in the Mennonite Church and was passionate about peace and social justice issues. He also wrote an extensive genealogy.

He was noted among friends and family for sending frequent postcards and letters.

Dr. Gerber was born in 1942 in Wooster, Ohio. He graduated from Goshen College in 1967 with a double major in music and chemistry, and then attended Tufts Medical School in Boston. He worked in New York, Hong Kong, Pennsylvania, Delaware and Ohio before coming to Nashville in 1997.

Survivors include his wife, Diane; two daughters from a previous marriage, Sarah and Elizabeth; two stepdaughters, Heiki-Lara Nyce and Inge-Marie Eigsti; and three grandchildren.

The family asked that donations be sent in lieu of flowers to Doctors without Borders, an organization that delivers emergency aid to victims of armed conflict, epidemics, and natural and man-made disasters.
